As I finish creating the pages for this site, I figured that I would write a short post on why I decided to create a new site.
My old site, being in the style of a man page, certainly had its charm. That charm, however, came at the cost of maintainability - a bunch of man pages interspersed with HTML run through multiple scripts in order to be turned into web pages was not the most workable system. That unmaintainability meant that testing was done on the live site - something that has been rectified by switching to plain HTML.
My old site used a .gay TLD. While I did like it, the unfortunate reality is that having a .gay TLD opens one to harrassment, especially as queerphobic sentiment has been on the rise around the world. I deal with enough as it is; I do not need my space on the internet to act as another avenue for harrassment.
As Canada and Canadians have found themselves under attack by the United States, a .ca domain provides a symbolic showing of resilience. It also provided an opportunity to move from an American registrar to a Canadian one.
A new site also allows me to refresh my site and its content. I have learned a lot when it comes to writing since I created my old site, and so my somewhat embarrassing blog posts from days gone can remain relics of the past and be replaced by newer and better-written articles.
With a new, more easily maintainable site, I plan to do more with my little corner of the internet. Ideally, a new blog post will be written more than once every six months, as I no longer have to fight with software in order to write my thoughts down.
